Old Parish Church (Archeological site), Siġġiewi
The old parish church in Siġġiewi pre-dates the arrival of the knights of St. John. It was built in the 15th century and enlarged in the subsequent two centuries before being replaced by the Lorenzo Gafa/Nikol Żammit masterpiece.
The old parish church is mentioned in the report of the pastoral visit of Bishop Pietro Dusina. It had two altars, two naves and a baptistry near the main door. It also had an adjacent chapel dedicated to our Lady of the Visitation. Two other churches, one dedicated to St. Michael and another to St. Sebastian were also nearby.
During a late 16th century visit by Bishop Tommaso Gargallo the church had five altars and was further enlarged in the 17th century. With its latest enlargement, during the reign of Bishop Baldassare Cagliares, the church assumed a crucifix form and had seven altars. It also had a cemetery adjacent to it.
World War Air Raid Shelter in Siggiewi
During World War II, Malta played a significant role due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea. The island was heavily bombed and subjected to numerous air raids, particularly the Italian and German air forces.
To protect the civilian population from these air raids, various types of shelters were constructed across Malta, especially in Siggiewi because a military's airstrip existed nearby, on the way to Ghar Lapsi . These shelters were designed to provide protection from aerial bombings and typically consisted of underground tunnels, caves, excavated underground. Some of them were built by the British military, while others were improvised by the local population.
These shelters are right under the main piazza with three entrances, one behind the statue of St. Nicholas and another two in front of our property. They are pretty massive with small rooms which the families themselves dug to have their own private space.
